Cocktail Recipe

The Black Fashion

A slightly different take on the classic Old Fashioned, dark in tone, bold in character, and surprisingly balanced.

This variation leans complex instead of sweet. The black walnut bitters and dark brown sugar molasses give the drink its signature deep color and layered finish.

Core Recipe

  • 1 oz high-proof (100) rye
  • 1 oz high-proof (100) bourbon
  • 1 1/4 tsp dark brown sugar
  • 2 to 3 dashes black walnut bitters
  • 2 maraschino cherries, for garnish

Variation

In place of dark brown sugar, use 1/4 oz real maple syrup for a softer sweetness that still complements the spirit-forward profile.

Implementation

The following are the specific ingredients and steps for making The Black Fashion cocktail, all of which can be easily be found at Total Wine or any well-stocked liquor store:

  • The rye I like to use is Rittenhouse Rye, a 100 proof whiskey.
  • The bourbon is Four Roses single barrel, but I've also had good results with Woodford Reserve (my usual go-to).
  • The black walnut bitters are Fee Brothers brand, which has a rich, nutty flavor that complements the dark spirits.

Combine the rye and bourbon with the dark brown sugar and black walnut bitters in a mixing glass. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Add a large ice cube and garnish with maraschino cherries.
